Spring Cleaning Equals Great Deals on Veneer. No Fooling.

In Michigan it looks as if spring is here to stay. We decided to do a bit of spring cleaning to make room for our expanding veneer inventory. Over the next few weeks we'll be adding a bunch of new and exotic wood veneer species to our stock. As we made some room on our shelves for the incoming stock, we found some unique veneers. These veneers are mostly over runs from custom orders and include heavily figured, special sized, or overstocked species. There is some great birdseye maple and ropey cherry veneer as well as some undersized 2’ x 4’ PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) various species veneers. Take a look below and see if you find anything you might need. You can use the linked index to go straight to the species or just scroll down the page and browse. Quantities are very limited and offers are good only while supplies last. Don’t hesitate to give us a call or email if you have any questions.

Making Sense of the Myriad Mahoganies

Since the beginning of time, well maybe not that long ago, the different names for various types of Mahogany and related species have been bandied about to the point of much confusion and misinformation. We thought by providing a little information we could help to add some clarity to the conversation and also arm you (our readers) with enough facts for you to feel confident when communicating with clients and helping them make informed decisions. Here's a short course on the most common and most commonly mistaken types of Mahogany.

African mahogany or Khaya tree.

African Mahogany (Khaya Ivorensis)
This is the most commonly found species being sold as Mahogany today. Its origin is tropical West Africa as the name implies. The heartwood is a medium reddish brown color and the grain structure is considered medium to coarse textured with open pores. It is moderately priced and is considered a valid substitute for Genuine or Honduran Mahogany (swietenia macrophylla).

Honduran Mahogany tree.

Honduran Mahogany (Swietenia Macrophylla)
Honduran Mahogany is what many know as Genuine Mahogany or Brazilian Mahogany. Though not as common as African Mahogany it is still relatively available commercially. Its origins extend from Southern Mexico into central South America. It is grown extensively but not exclusively on plantations and is therefore sustainable. The heartwood can vary from a pale pinkish brown color to a dark reddish brown and it will darken with age. The grain texture is considered medium with medium to large pores. It's still moderately priced and only slightly more than African Mahogany.

Cuban Mahogany

http://www.bluemoonexoticwood.com
Cuban Mahogany (Swietenia Mahogani)
Very rare and very expensive (when it's available) Cuban Mahogany is the original Genuine Mahogany. The heartwood is typically a light pinkish brown color to a dark reddish brown, usually the denser the wood the darker the color. Cuban Mahogany was extensively used in early period furniture in Europe and the US until mid century when Cuba banned all exports of the lumber because of over harvesting. It is still in scarce supply from other sources in the Caribbean. The texture of true Cuban Mahogany is medium with a medium to open pore structure.

Philippine mahogany
Philippine Mahogany Logs

Philippine Mahogany
Philippine Mahogany is an umbrella term applied to various species of wood from Southeast Asia, most often Meranti and Lauan. The woods generally referred to as Philippine Mahogany are technically not related to any wood species from the Swietenia or Khaya genus.

You Need to Veneer Something and You Have to Use Contact Cement

You have a project, you want to use paper backed wood veneer, and you have to use contact cement. Can it be done? How? The quick answer is yes, it can be done. It can be done by you and it can be done successfully. The key is to consider and prepare for all the potential pitfalls that arise with a flexible glue line. To apply flexible wood veneer with contact cement is not difficult but the method is meticulous and there are no short cuts. Below you can find comprehensive instructions for adhering paperbacked veneer with contact cement. On large projects or full size panel layups this method can be very labor intensive.

Applying wood veneer with contact cement is an acceptable method when other methods aren’t available or practical. By following these established practices and recommendations you will have good success using contact cement with 20mil paperbacked, wood backed and phenolic resin backed wood veneer. Do not use contact cement to adhere raw or unbacked wood veneers.

Wood Veneer Application When Using Contact Cement

Preparation
When you receive your veneer you must allow time for it to acclimate to your environment prior to use. To accomplish this it’s necessary to remove the veneer from the packaging and lay it flat for a minimum of 48 hours up to 4 days. It may be necessary to apply some weight on the ends of the sheet to help retain flatness during this period. The ideal environment for this process is between 35% and 50% relative humidity and temperature levels between 65 to 80 degrees F. It is also important to allow your substrate material to acclimate in the same conditions for the same amount of time as the veneer. This will ensure that materials will be relatively equal in terms of relative moisture and temperature. It’s best to plan ahead if possible and avoid veneering when conditions of high humidity or extreme dry conditions are expected.

Adhesives for Wood Veneer
Solvent based contact adhesives work best for wood veneering with our products. When it is necessary to use water based adhesives you may want to consider using a phenolic resin backed wood veneer. Before using any adhesive be sure it is at room temperature and properly mixed as the solids which create the bond strength tend to settle much like pigment in paint. Brush or roller grade adhesives are best to achieve 100% coverage on all surface areas. Spray grade adhesives can be used but you must be sure you get 100% surface coverage. It’s necessary to coat both surfaces that are to be bonded. It’s not always necessary but on some smooth glossy surfaces it will help bond strength if you scuff sand the surface with 120 grit sandpaper prior to glue application. If the substrate is “open” or “porous” it will require a second application of glue as the first coat will partially absorb into the surface. This is most likely to occur when using plywood as your substrate. All contact cements require time for the solvents to “flash off” before the two surfaces can be mated together. This period, referred to as “open time” will be specified by the manufacturer and should be adhered to. Extreme conditions such as high heat, high humidity, low temperatures etc., can effect the open time so some discretion must be used under these conditions. It is important to understand and follow the adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations on application of their product.

Tools and Supplies for Wood Veneering
There are a few basic supplies and tools to have ready before you veneer. You will need a good quality contact cement, small roller or brush for glue application, a veneer scraper or smoothing tool and separator strips. Veneer scrapers can be purchased commercially and typically consist of a wooden handle and a stiff blade of polycarbonate or lexan about 4” wide. You can also make one by using a piece of hardwood approximately 4” wide by 12 to 16” in length. Make sure one end is cut nice and straight and use sandpaper to gently ease the corners and edge to eliminate any sharp lines. If you want you can also contour the upper portion of the handle to create a comfortable grip. With this smoothing blade you will generate excellent leverage and good pressure on the surface. The separator strips can be pieces of hardwood, MDF or hardboard or some people use wooden dowels. They should be long enough to span the width of the piece you are veneering. We don’t advocate the use of any type of J-roller for veneer application. You will not generate enough pressure with any type of J-roller.

So What is Reconstituted Veneer?

Reconstituted wood veneer is actual wood fiber and is made from fast growing trees in managed forests. This type of flexible veneer is a readily renewable product which makes it an environmentally friendly alternative to some of the more rare and expensive exotic wood species. Even though reconstituted veneer is fabricated from manmade flitch and is virtually defect free it is a lot different from plastic laminate. It is more flexible and more natural in texture and appearance. Although a manmade flitch veneer product tends to be more stable than traditional flitch wood veneer sheets, the wood fibers and cells are still susceptible to moisture and have to be sealed with a finish. This helps to accentuate the color and figure of the veneer. Often referred to as Engineered or Composite veneer, it is a great option for those projects where veneer color and consistency is critical from start to finish.

Is bamboo veneer a reconstituted veneer? Yes and no. Bamboo is a fast growing and highly sustainable resource but there are some basic differences between bamboo and reconstituted veneer. Bamboo veneer consists of actual bamboo and is usually not dyed or made to look like a different species (carbonized bamboo gets its color from being steamed), whereas a reconstituted veneer is made from a secondary wood species that is sliced, dyed, layered and laminated in alternating layers and in specific ways in order to represent a different species. This process produces natural looking wood grains and colors thought only to exist in nature. The names for this type of veneer do not come from the wood species the veneer is made from but rather from the colors and layer designs that it mimics. The common characteristic that bamboo and reconstituted veneer share is in the way the flitches are manufactured. Both are built from thin layers that are glued into cants and then sliced into thin but wide flitches. These thin flitches or leafs are then stitched or spliced into larger sheets. Once these sheets are pressed, flexed and trimmed they are sanded and ready for use.

How to apply pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) backed veneer.

If you have ever wondered what it takes to successfully apply pressure sensitive adhesive backed wood veneer, below you'll find comprehensive instructions to do just that. Pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) is very thin acrylic based film applied to 10mil paper backed flexible wood veneer sheets. It is often referred to as "peel and stick" veneer. In recent years this method of applying wood veneer has gained much popularity with professionals and do it yourselfers because of its relative ease of use and no mess application. It also eliminates the need for a hot press and/ or vacuum bag and allows the veneer to be adhered to more nontraditional substrates such as steel and plastic. Although the wood veneer is available in 2' x 8', 4' x 8', and even 4' x 10' sheets the PSA method of application is not very practical for veneering full size panels. PSA wood veneer is easy to apply but it can become very labor intensive especially on large projects with vast surface areas and there are steps to the application that are meticulous. Namely, making sure that every square inch of the surface area has had enough pressure applied to it.

PSA Veneer Application Instructions

Preparation
When you first receive your veneer inspect it thoroughly for satisfaction of grade and quality prior to lamination. Next it’s very important to allow your veneer to acclimate prior to use. This is done by laying the veneer flat on a surface and allowing it to “relax” in your environment for a minimum of 48 hours up to 4 days. It may be necessary to apply some weight on the ends of the sheet to help retain its flatness during this period.

Tools and Supplies
Before starting your veneering project you’ll want to gather some basic tools and supplies. You will need 120 grit sandpaper, tack cloth, denatured alcohol, a sharp utility or exacto knife and a veneer scraper. We don’t advocate the use of any type of J-roller for veneer application. You will not generate enough pressure with any type of J-roller.

Surface Preparation
Your substrate, or the surface you are going to laminate, needs to be prepped prior to veneering with PSA veneer. For finished surfaces you will need to scuff sand the entire surface with a medium (120 grit) sandpaper. After sanding remove all sanding dust and residue with tack cloth and wipe the surface clean with denatured alcohol. If you plan to veneer on an unfinished wood surface or plywood it is recommended that you first seal the surface with a coat of varnish, shellac or polyurethane finish. Allow the finish ample drying time, usually 24 hours, and then continue on with the veneer application.
